Still spots left for this Saturday's workshop

Join me for a great color class this weekend!
I know you are all enjoying this fabulous weather right now. What a delightful break from all the craziness! Let's see how long it lasts.

I still have several spots left in my color workshop this Saturday. I am very excited about teaching this one. It builds on the color mixing classes I've taught  in the past. In this class, I want to simplify the way you think about color and color mixing. It's not about painting  like I do, but about helping you control your color and get better results on the canvas. Join me if you can.  Full details below.

Color Confidence 2 -  Learn to control your neutrals
Callanwolde Art Center
Feb 22  Sat 10am - 3 pm 1 Day
Now that you have mastered pure color and are comfortable moving color from one hue to another, learn how to create and manipulate neutral colors. This class will focus on understanding the colors you have mixed on your palette, or store bought colors, and then how to get the most life out of your color without making mud. This class is about really seeing the colors before you and then using color theory to get the results you want on the canvas. The first half of the class will be demos and discussion, and then you will create a painting to practice your color confidence. I will be teaching the class in oils, but you may use acrylics. Contact me with any questions. dawn@dawnart.com Bring a sack lunch and such.

"Going Back to Louisiana" 24 x 30

On the easel tonight. "Going back to Louisiana" 24 x 30 oil on canvas palette knife. This is from a trip through S. Louisiana. I thought it was a nice departure from my red landscapes of late. Enjoyed working with a fresh color palette. — at Dawn Art.

Painting with St Anne's Treehouse Two's Class

It's getting close to auction time at Saint Anne's Day School.
This year the school had artists come in and work with different classes to create a piece of art as a fundraiser for the school. I was paired up with the  Treehouse Two's class. Below is the project I worked on with the class. What a great group of young artists, teachers and parents.
After we came up with a plan, I built a 30x30 structure for the painting. Then I applied modeling paste and carved out the design.

Below - Day 1 - Working with the class. We started with the big areas of colors first.  Look at them go. I think everyones favorite part was the hand signatures on the back! Who doesn't want to get messy with art?

Below - Day 2- Now that the back ground colors have dried, I came back and we started on the leaves. We masked off the sky so the young artists could focus on the circles. It was so fun watching painting come together. What a great group!
Now that the young artists have finished, it was time for me to take the painting back to my studio for a few final details and to get it ready for the auction.  Touched up, varnished, wire on back, "Glow Tree"  is ready to go!

"Glow Tree" 30x 30 Acrylic on wood
I really enjoyed working on this project with the class. A big thank you to Moire Menning for all of her help in coordinating everything. I hope the auction is a huge success.
Happy painting!

On the Easel Today

The fourth painting in my fall series. I started this in my open studio painting class last night and was able to work on it a little bit more this evening. I know this probably looks like a painting about a river in a field, but it's really about moving color back and forth in space. That's why I love painting, there is always a new challenge to work on.

Happy painting!

New Plein air event in Atlanta

This looks like a lot of fun! I am going to apply. What a great opportunity to participate in a plein air event so close to home. I'll let you know if I get selected.

Art is going wild at Zoo Atlanta! Announcing the Zoo’s first-annual plein air event, “Art Gone Wild,” from Monday, June 2 – Friday, June 6, 2013, at Zoo Atlanta. An art show and silent auction will take place on Saturday, June 14.

Twenty artists will be selected to create their art “en plein air,” using the exotic and inspiring animals, botanicals and scenery of the Zoo as their muses. Zoo Atlanta guests will have the opportunity to watch as the artists take their canvases from blank to beautiful.

Call for entry to artists begins on February 1 and ends March 31.  Email artgonewild@zooatlanta.org    with questions or to request an application.
