Free Plein air events

New this year - Plein air Thursdays! Starting this fall a group of us will  take our paints and easels  around the Atlanta area.
Plein air painting is when you are painting on location. If you are interested keep a look out for updates and join us.

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer  (even with all the rain)!  As much as i have enjoyed traveling with art shows and painting, I am glad to be back home and really looking forward to fall classes starting back. I have included weekly classes and workshops I'll be teaching  this fall quarter. Take a look and see if any of them work for you. I'd love for you to join me if you can.

Painting Studio: All Media



This course emphasizes artistic development in a relaxed and fun studio environment with a  variety of music to keep you motivated. Regardless of your level of training or ability, you work on your own projects, using any medium you choose, in this self-paced class. You are encouraged to pursue individual interests and further develop your unique style. The instructor is available for guidance, motivation and demonstrations of technique. There will be class demos as well as individual assistance.  Bring your painting supplies  and reference materials to the first class sessions and be prepared to work. This is an on going class that offers a lot of flexibility for the students. Please contact the instructor with any questions about materials and what to bring for the first class.

Paint with Color Confidence Worksop 

Have you been struggling with controlling color? Do you mix a lot of mud? Well, no more! This class will have you painting with color confidence. Using a simple still life as a reference, learn to work with the color wheel to lighten and darken your colors, find out why values are so important, and more. These color mixing lessons will be taught by demos and then students will use their new knowledge in class with a still set up.

Palette Knife Wrokshop


In this fun and quick-paced course, students explore techniques used to create expressive paintings with a palette knife. Working with a palette knife well as with paint additives to create a broad range of textures, students learn the nuances of value working wet in wet and layering in order to keep colors rich and vibrant. This course will begin with painting demo to cover the basic approach and continue with demos and working one on one with the students. Appropriate for beginners . The class will be taught using oils but you may use Acrylics. Please contact instructor at dawn@dawnart.com with any questions.

If you already have paints, bring what you have but this is what you need for class. Supplies available at Utrecht or Binders or other art supply stores.


These are the primary colors. Buy the professional brands in these three colors. I have the pigment codes below. Use the pigment codes as a guide to buy the right color as color names change all the time.
Red - permanent rose/ quinacridone red- pigment code PV19
Yellow - cadnium yellow, or hue - pigment code PY35
Blue - Phalo Blue green or blue shade fine -pigment code PB15
Titanium white 5OZ Tube
Yellow Ochre or Yellow Oxide
Beginning brush kit with a mix of bristle and soft brushes.
12 x 16 Canvas or larger
Acrylic and oil disposable Palette Pad 9 x12 . You can use a roll wax paper
Palette knife plastic or metal
Sketch pad
Pencil l
Roll of paper towels
Spray bottle for water
Cup or coffee can to clean brushes in

If using oils
LIQUIN or other medium for thinning the paint
Odorless mineral spirit and a sealed container for cleaning brushes

Mt Gretna Art Fair this Weekend






I've been very busy this
Spring and summer painting up a storm
There is a sailing series inspired by my new saling lessons, time spent at the coast,  and a sampling of  plein air works  from my time in Cape Cod.
Mount Gretna Outdoor Festival
I'll be in the same booth as the previous years R108.
It's a nice corner booth on the footpath at Princeton and Pennsylvania Ave.
