Plein Air Competition This Weekend!

II have been preparing for my first plein air competition and it's almost here! This weekend is the 3rd Annual Paint Out at the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. Check in start at 7 am each morning to have your canvas stamped, although I doubt I'll start that early. All artists have to turn the stamped canvas in at the end of the day. Judging begins at 3:00 on Sunday, followed by a reception and sale from 6:30 - 8:30.

I wanted to make sure I was comfortable and very portable for this weekend so I made a new palette shelf for my easel. I took it out yesterday to give it a try and I LOVE IT ! I had room for everything. I put a shoulder strap on it so it was easy to carry as well.  If you find yourself in Marietta this weekend, stop by and say hello.

Happy painting!

Happy Spring Ya'll

Update  - I just touched this up in the studio and I think I'm happy with it. I have been trying for awhile to figure out how paint the scrubby trees as they are just coming out to bloom.

What a great day to be out there painting! A good start for spring. I went back to the Nature Reserve this week and tried to finish my painting from last week.

I was listening to the book"Julia Child" while painting today, I got so involved,  I forgot to snap a photo before leaving. Here's what I got done today.

Have a great day!

Happy painting!

Nature is Blooming at the "Natural Beauty" Art Show

The art show will be March 9 – May 4.  The opening party is scheduled for March 13, 7-9pm.  The gallery location is 1710 Defoor Avenue, NW, Atlanta, GA.  The event is free to the public.

Winter has been harsh.  Fresh blooms and all the beautiful colors Spring brings will be welcomed.  So we say, “Enough with the snow.  Come on Spring!”  Our Natural Beauty show will exhibit the landscapes, flowers and all the splendid views nature gives us.

Patrick Dennis, Maureen Engle, Dawn Kinney Martin, Greta Mattingly, Wynne Ragland are the featured artists.  Patrick’s aspects of nature are very calming and serene.  While her specialty is palette knife painting, Maureen likes to experiment with different mediums and combinations including oil, acrylic, oil pastels, watercolor and collage.  Dawn also uses oils to portray scenes of her travels en plein air.  “Realism with a twist” is what Greta calls her work.  Wynne’s photography capture objects of nature that are simple and raw.

This show will warm you like the spring sun.

Why do you do it?!?

Why do we do what we do? This is a question that keeps coming up in the classes I have been at C4 (business classes for artists). I am amazed by how hard this question is to answer.
Easy answers:
I can.  I love it.  I'm curious.  Etc....
Why is this such a hard thing to answer? I have been making art most of my life. I have a degree in painting. I have been teaching painting classes for 14 years. But why do I do this? Well..., I love making 3 dimensional space on a 2 dimensional plane, moving color back in forth within that 2D space.  I  love problem solving, and I just like to walk around and look and think about how so many things are possible on one little planet.

I have been assigned to make my mission statement  as part of my class work, and after a lot of struggle, I think I have it.

Mission :
Create expressive paintings that elevate the ordinary and encourage the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the day to day.

When it comes down to it, I always feel so lucky. I love my work and I can always learn and improve.
I look forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.
Paint on my friends,
Dawn

Painting for " A Night in Paris" at the Botanical Gardens

This Thursday evening I will have the opportunity to paint for a special event at the botanical gardens, “A night in Paris”. I've been hired to paint for a members party for Orchid Daze celebrating impressionism. What a great opportunity, I'll try to get a few good photos of the party.

Update - photos from the event,

I had a great time and got to meet a lot of cool people. There was a quartet dressed in period costume - they were great and really added to the event. I was able to get them in the painting.
